BirdsontheNiagaraFrontier.org is the brainchild of Gerry Rising and Michael Noonan (see below).  It is designed to promote interest in birding and wildlife conservation in Western New York and Southern Ontario.

January – John Michalovic- Winter Waterfowl

Due to his expertise, John is well known to sportsmen and women across the Niagara Region for his waterfowl identification instruction.

February – Willie D’Anna – Winter Birding

In addition to his formal activities as a local and state ornithological statistician, Willie has set many records for birds recorded by day, month and year.

March – Marcie Jacklin – Raptor Migration

Marcie is an avid birder whose life list includes sighting in fourteen countries.  Equally important to her contributions to migratory bird counts are Marcie’s political battles to preserve exceptional birding locales within this region.  Click here to learn more about the effort to preserve habitat at Waverly Woods.

April – Doug Domedion – Eagles and Ospreys

Well-known for his remarkable nature photography, Doug has worked with local and state Department for Environmental Conservation staff for years providing support for and seeking protection of the eagles and ospreys of this region.

May – Sue Barth – Migratory Warblers

Sue Barth is recognized widely as a regional birding authority. Many of her photos serve today to establish regional records for rare birds.

June – Chris Hollister – Breeding Bird Survey

Having already established a personal world list of 1180 species (including 10 in North Korea), Chris has now also listed 160 bird species on the University at Buffalo north campus.

July – Connie Adams – Colonial Nesting Seabirds

In addition to her contributions as Department of Environmental Conservation monitor of local colonial waterbirds, Connie has played a central role in reestablishing the peregrine falcon on the Niagara Frontier.

August – Dwight Kauppi – Bluebirds

A member of the NYS Bluebird Society, Dwight has been helping to monitor bluebird boxes for more than ten years.  He voices enthusiastic praise for the entire team at the Genesee Country Museum Nature Center.

September – Mike Morgante – Shorebird Migration

Mike connects his conservation-related work as an Energy and Environment Company engineer with his long-stablished interest in birds. He recently completed a term a Buffalo Ornithological Society president.

October – Bill Michalek – Bird Banding

Former director of the Beaver Meadow Audubon Center, Bill continues to teach about our environment in schools and through his nationally-recognized blog (with Steve Fleck) The Field Guides.

November – Tom Kerr – Winter Gulls

A very active field birder, Tom’s many bird programs for the Buffalo Audubon Society are both creating and fostering interest in the avocation of birding.

December – Meaghan Boice-Green – Woodpeckers

As director of the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Dr. Victor Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve, Meaghan oversees a wide range of nature-related programs as well as this 292-acre preserve.

Gerry Rising

A retired University at Buffalo math professor, Gerry Rising continues to extend his over 80 years of bird watching. He is known locally for his 1280 Buffalo News “Nature Watch” columns and his current Buffalo Spree writing. A former editor of the state journal, The Kingbird, he also initiated the statewide January Waterfowl Count. He continues to publish books about birds and mathematics.

Michael Noonan

Michael Noonan is a retired Canisius College professor of Animal Behavior.  He has produced a dozen films that promote nature awareness and wildlife conservation.
